Returned Equity

Money from a home sold for unpaid taxes may still be yours.

When a county or lender sells a home to pay a debt, anything above the debt is held for the former owner, or for their heirs if the owner has died. Many people never hear about it. We help them find it and claim it.

We are a private company.

Returned Equity is not a government agency, a law firm or a debt collector, and is not affiliated with any county, court or treasurer. You never have to use us to get money that is owed to you.

How it works

We do the research and the paperwork. You stay in control, and the money is paid to you, not to us.

Step 1

We find the money

We review public records of tax and foreclosure sales to find surplus that is still unclaimed.

Step 2

We confirm who it belongs to

We trace the former owner, or the heirs when the owner has died, using deeds and public records.

Step 3

We prepare the claim

We fill in the agency's own claim forms and gather the documents. You review, sign and file them.

Step 4

You are paid directly

The agency pays you. Only after you receive the money do you pay our fee.

You can claim it yourself, for free

Surplus is held by the agency that ran the sale. If you know the property and the sale, you can contact them directly and ask how to file a claim.

Our fee

10%

of the money released, and only if you are paid. If you receive nothing, you owe nothing.

Questions

Why didn't I hear about this money?

Agencies send a notice to the last address on record. People move, owners pass away, and heirs are often never named in the records, so many notices never reach the right person.

The owner has died. Can the family still claim?

Often, yes. Surplus can pass to the owner's estate or heirs. That may require opening a probate case, which you or your lawyer would file. We will tell you what the agency requires.

Is this a scam?

Be careful with anyone who asks for money up front or tells you that you must use them. We charge nothing up front, the agency pays you directly, and you can always claim for free yourself. You can verify any amount we tell you about with the agency.

Where do you work?

We are starting with Baltimore City, Maryland, and Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

What do you do with my information?

We use it only to pursue your claim and share it only with the agency or court handling it. We do not sell it, and we delete it 12 months after your claim closes.
